About Mabira Forest

 Our One Day Birding Great Safari in the Mabira Forest of Uganda will expose to you an interesting destination for bird-watching safaris in Mabira Forest. Mabira forest is found in the Eastern part of Uganda  located in Buikwe District, between Lugazi and Jinja. It has been protected as a Forest Reserve since 1932. Visitors from Kampala  reach the forest reserve for a drive of about 54 kilometers while from Jinja, it will only be 2o kilometers from Jinja city. Mabira forest covers square miles of about 120 and has got 311 tree species.

Mabira forest harbors a lot of species that include birds, primates, and butterflies some of these species cannot be seen anywhere in the World meaning that they can only be seen in the Mabira Forest Reserve. The forest reserve harbors about 219 butter flies, about 316 seventy-nine species, and about 97 months. The most bird species in Mabira include the grey Parrot, Hairy-breasted Barbet, Nathan’s Francolin, Sabine’s Spinetail, Speckled Tinkerbird, White-bellied Kingfisher, White-spotted Flufftail, Yellow-billed Barbet, Yellow-spotted Barbet, and the Yellow-throated Tinkerbird among others. Birding in Mabira central forest is great because of the sheer density of bird species.

Activities in Mabira

Mabira forest is a unique destination for tourism destinations for different visitors. Some of the tourists come to Uganda to visit Mabira and engage in different activities and see several attractions. While in Mabira Forest you will be able to do cycling safaris, guided nature walks, wildlife viewing, bird watching, ziplining or canopy walk, tracking monkeys, cultural encounters, or enjoying the natural picnic among other activities. While engaging in bird watching activity, you will follow three major trails which include the Red trail that goes for up to (33kilometers, Yellow Trail which goes for 12 kilometers, and the 5 kilometers which is the White Trail.   1. Day 1 Bird Watching in Mabira Forest

    Mabira forest is birding paradise and the biggest intact forest nearest to Kampala city and Jinja town where the river Nile starts its journey to the Mediterranean sea. For a birding experience in Mabira forest, we leave Kampala early morning with preferably packed lunch where possible or choose to have a hot meal at the Mabira forest lodge. Mabira forest is home to over 300 bird species and on a good weather day one is able to sight over 100 bird species. The forest is surrounded by cultivation both at subsistence level and commercial; Sugarcane and tea plantations. On arrival we shall take one of the community trails in the forest that offers great bird watching opportunities. There are resident bird guides who you can choose to contact from the Eco tourism center to help in case you are interested in specific bird species. The birding trails in the forest have been well maintained making it easy to walk through and bird along both the foot paths and wider village roads.

    The birds we will look out for in Mabira forest include; Black & white Casqued Hornbill, African pied Hornbill, African and Red bellied Paradise Flycatcher, Jameson’s wattle eyes, Great blue Turaco, Tit Hylia, Sooty flycatchers, Toro Olive Greenbul, Purple throated cuckoo shrike, Green-tailed Bristlebill, Nahan’s francolin, Shining blue Kingfisher, blue-breasted Kingfisher, striped Kingfishers and Dwarf Kingfisher, Grey headed and olive bellied sunbirds,  etc.
