Congo itineraries generally fall into three categories. A short three to four day trip focuses purely on Virunga, either mountain gorilla trekking, the Nyiragongo volcano hike, or both, and works well as an add-on to a longer Rwanda trip. A five to six day itinerary adds a genuine rest stop on Lake Kivu between activities, avoiding a rushed back-to-back schedule. A seven-day itinerary extends further south to Kahuzi-Biega, combining both mountain and Eastern lowland gorilla trekking, DRC’s most complete gorilla experience and something no neighbouring country can offer on a single trip.

Best Time for a Congo Safari

The dry seasons, roughly June to September and December to February, offer the firmest trekking conditions for both gorilla trekking and the Nyiragongo volcano hike, and are generally the periods we recommend booking around.

Visa, Entry and Health Requirements

Most nationalities require a DRC visa arranged in advance of travel, and we assist with the required paperwork and documentation as part of every Congo booking, including specific guidance for travellers crossing overland from Rwanda at the Goma-Gisenyi border post. A yellow fever certificate is required for entry. Malaria prevention is worth discussing with a travel health clinic ahead of any Congo trip.

What to Pack for a Congo Safari

Gorilla trekking gear requirements in Congo match those for Rwanda and Uganda: sturdy waterproof hiking boots, long trousers and long sleeves in neutral colours, a rain jacket, and gardening gloves for pushing through vegetation. Travellers adding the Nyiragongo volcano hike should pack considerably warmer layers than they might expect for equatorial Africa, since temperatures at the crater rim drop sharply after dark, along with a headlamp for early morning and after-dark movement around camp. A good camera with a versatile zoom range suits both the close-range gorilla encounters and the wider volcanic and lake landscapes covered across a typical itinerary.

Currency and Communication

US dollars printed after 2009 are the most practical currency across eastern DRC’s tourism infrastructure, covering permits, park fees and most lodge bills, while the Congolese franc is more useful for small local purchases. Mobile network coverage is generally reliable in Goma and Bukavu but becomes patchy or unavailable inside the parks themselves and during the Nyiragongo ascent, worth knowing in advance if you need to stay reachable during your trip.

Why Congo Gorilla Trekking Costs Less Than Rwanda’s

One practical reason travellers add a Congo extension to a regional gorilla trekking trip is cost. Virunga National Park’s gorilla trekking permits are priced meaningfully below Rwanda’s, and often below Uganda’s as well, a pricing decision made by the Congolese park authority partly to help rebuild international visitor numbers after periods of reduced tourism. For travellers weighing up where to spend a second or third gorilla trekking day on a multi-country itinerary, this cost difference is often the deciding factor, alongside the appeal of visiting a genuinely less-crowded park.

This lower pricing does not reflect a lower-quality experience. Virunga’s ranger and tracking teams are highly experienced, having operated through some of the most difficult conditions of any conservation area in Africa, and the park’s habituated gorilla families receive the same daily monitoring and welfare standards applied across the wider Virunga Massif ecosystem shared with Rwanda and Uganda.
