Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Transfer from Kampala or Entebbe to Queen Elizabeth National Park
Your driver-guide will pick you up from your hotel, residence, or Entebbe International Airport early in the morning and brief you about the safari before departure. Begin the journey westward through Uganda’s beautiful countryside. Along the way, you will pass through small towns, traditional villages, tea plantations, and rolling hills that characterize the western region of the country.
A stop will be made at the Equator crossing in Kayabwe where you can take photographs, enjoy refreshments, and purchase souvenirs. Continue through Mbarara and proceed toward Queen Elizabeth National Park while enjoying views of Ankole cattle farms and scenic landscapes. Lunch will be served at a selected restaurant en route.
Arrive at the park in the afternoon and enjoy your first wildlife sightings as you enter the protected area. Animals such as Uganda kobs, warthogs, elephants, and buffaloes are commonly seen along the roads leading to the lodge. Check in and spend the evening relaxing while enjoying views of the surrounding wilderness.

Day 2: Morning Game Drive and Kazinga Channel Boat Cruise
Wake up early and enjoy breakfast before heading out for a morning game drive in the Kasenyi Plains, one of the best wildlife viewing areas in Queen Elizabeth National Park. The early morning hours offer excellent opportunities to spot lions returning from hunts, elephants feeding in the grasslands, buffaloes grazing in large herds, and antelopes roaming the open plains. The Kasenyi sector is also one of the best locations in Uganda for observing predators and large concentrations of Uganda kob.
Your guide will help identify wildlife and explain the ecology of the park while searching for various species.
After the game drive, return to the lodge for lunch and relaxation.
In the afternoon, head to the Kazinga Channel jetty for a boat cruise along one of Africa’s most wildlife-rich waterways. The channel connects Lake George and Lake Edward and attracts huge numbers of animals throughout the year.
During the cruise, you can expect to see large concentrations of hippos, Nile crocodiles, buffaloes, elephants, waterbucks, and numerous bird species along the shoreline. The boat trip provides exceptional opportunities for photography and close wildlife viewing.
Return to the lodge in the evening.

Day 3: Morning Game Drive and Return to Kampala or Entebbe
After an early breakfast, enjoy a final morning game drive within the park. This drive provides another opportunity to search for wildlife that may not have been seen on the previous day.
The cool morning temperatures often encourage animals to remain active, increasing the chances of excellent sightings before departure. After the game drive, return to the lodge, check out, and begin the journey back to Kampala or Entebbe.
Enjoy lunch along the way and take in the beautiful scenery of western Uganda during the drive. A brief stop may be made at the Equator crossing for refreshments and photographs before continuing toward your destination.

This three-day itinerary is built entirely around Queen Elizabeth National Park, giving genuine time to explore both its northern Kasenyi plains, known for lion and large kob herds, and a Kazinga Channel boat cruise, without primate trekking extending the trip further.
This makes it a strong choice for travelers whose priority is classic savannah game viewing rather than gorilla or chimpanzee trekking, or those who have already trekked elsewhere and want a dedicated wildlife-focused add-on.
Practical Notes
A Uganda e-visa or East Africa Tourist Visa, arranged before travel, is required for most nationalities, along with a yellow fever vaccination certificate if arriving from a country with risk of transmission. Travel insurance covering trekking activities and medical evacuation is strongly recommended, and malaria prevention is worth discussing with a travel health clinic ahead of your trip.
US dollars printed after 2009 are widely accepted for park fees, permits and lodge bills, while Ugandan shillings are more practical for tips and smaller day-to-day purchases.
Because permits and lodge availability are limited, particularly during the June to September and December to February peak seasons, we recommend booking this itinerary at least three to four months in advance for peak-season travel.
Tipping is customary though not compulsory. Rangers and trackers typically receive a tip at the end of any trekking or guided activity, scaled to group size, while your driver-guide is usually tipped separately at the end of the full trip.

Ishasha’s Tree-Climbing Lions
If this itinerary’s routing includes Queen Elizabeth’s Ishasha sector, tree-climbing lions are one of the park’s signature sightings, an unusual behavior seen in only a handful of lion populations worldwide, where prides rest draped across fig tree branches during the heat of the day rather than resting on the ground as lions typically do elsewhere.
Sightings are not guaranteed on every visit, since they depend on where the resident pride happens to be resting, but experienced guides are skilled at reading recent signs and generally deliver strong odds of a sighting across a standard visit to the sector.
Additional Trip Details
Beyond the Kazinga Channel boat cruise and Ishasha’s tree-climbing lions, Queen Elizabeth National Park’s Kasenyi plains offer some of Uganda’s most reliable lion and large-herd game viewing, with kob antelope congregating in numbers dense enough to draw consistent predator activity across most of the year. Early morning game drives here, timed to catch the cooler hours before the day’s heat sets in, generally offer the best combination of active wildlife and comfortable driving conditions.
The park’s location, roughly five to six hours by road from Kampala or a shorter flight to the nearby Kasese or Mweya airstrips, makes it a practical standalone destination as well as a natural stop on a longer southwestern Uganda circuit connecting to Bwindi or Kibale Forest. This itinerary can be extended in either direction if you decide partway through planning that you want to add primate trekking to what started as a purely wildlife-focused trip.

Gorilla Permits and Booking
Only a limited number of gorilla trekking permits are issued for Bwindi each day, one per visitor per habituated family, which keeps groups small and disturbance to the gorillas to a minimum — a maximum of eight visitors are allowed with each family per day. Because demand regularly outstrips supply during the peak dry seasons, permits are best secured well in advance of travel; we handle the full booking process through the Uganda Wildlife Authority as part of your itinerary so you arrive with everything confirmed. Each permit covers one hour with the gorillas once they are located, though the trek itself to reach them is unregulated in length. Visitors under fifteen years of age and anyone showing symptoms of a communicable illness are not permitted to trek, a rule designed to protect the gorillas, which share close to 98% of human DNA and are highly susceptible to human respiratory infections.
Tree-Climbing Lions of Ishasha
The Ishasha sector in the southern part of Queen Elizabeth National Park is famous for a rare behavioural trait: lions here regularly climb into the branches of the sector’s large fig trees, reportedly to escape biting insects and the heat of the savannah floor, and to get a better vantage point for spotting prey. Spotting a pride draped over the low branches of a fig tree is one of the more memorable sightings on a Uganda safari, though it requires patience since the behaviour is not guaranteed on any single game drive. Ishasha is quieter than the park’s main Kasenyi plains, seeing far fewer vehicles, which makes for a more private and unhurried game-viewing experience.
Chimpanzee Tracking in Kibale Forest
Kibale Forest National Park protects one of the highest densities of primates in Africa, and its main draw is tracking habituated chimpanzee communities through the forest understory. Treks typically last one to three hours and reward visitors with close views of chimps feeding, grooming and moving through the canopy, along with their loud, distinctive pant-hoot calls echoing through the trees. Beyond chimpanzees, Kibale is home to eleven other primate species, including L’Hoest’s and red colobus monkeys, grey-cheeked mangabeys and the elusive nocturnal potto, making it a rewarding stop even beyond the headline chimp trek. For visitors wanting a deeper experience, a full-day chimpanzee habituation permit allows several hours with a community from dawn, following researchers as they carry out their morning routine.
