Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Transfer from Entebbe or Kampala to Sipi Falls
After breakfast, depart Kampala or Entebbe and drive east towards Sipi Falls. The journey offers beautiful views of sugar plantations, rural communities, and the rolling landscapes of eastern Uganda.
Arrive in Sipi during the afternoon and check into your lodge. Relax and enjoy spectacular views of Mount Elgon and the surrounding valleys.

Day 2: Sipi Falls Hike and Coffee Experience
After breakfast, enjoy a guided hike to the famous Sipi Falls. Explore the three waterfalls that make up the Sipi Falls system while enjoying panoramic views of the Karamoja plains and Mount Elgon foothills.
After lunch, participate in a coffee experience where you will learn how local Arabica coffee is grown, harvested, processed, roasted, and prepared.
Return to your lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 3: Transfer to Kidepo Valley National Park

Check into your lodge and relax as you prepare for wildlife viewing the following day.

Day 4: Full Day Game Drive in Kidepo Valley National Park
Spend the day exploring Kidepo Valley National Park with extensive game drives in the Narus Valley and surrounding wildlife-rich areas.
Search for elephants, buffaloes, lions, cheetahs, giraffes, zebras, elands, waterbucks, and numerous bird species. Kidepo offers some of the best wildlife viewing opportunities in East Africa.
Return to the lodge in the evening for dinner and overnight.

Uganda’s Far North and East
This itinerary combines two of Uganda’s more remote, less-visited destinations: Kidepo Valley National Park in the far northeast, known for its rugged, semi-arid landscape and species found nowhere else in Uganda, and Sipi Falls on the slopes of Mount Elgon in the east, a set of three linked waterfalls popular with hikers and coffee tour visitors.
Because both destinations sit off Uganda’s more heavily trafficked southwestern circuit, this itinerary suits travelers who have already researched Bwindi and Queen Elizabeth and specifically want to see a different, quieter side of the country.
Getting Between Kidepo and Sipi
Given the distance between these two destinations, this itinerary typically uses a mix of scheduled flights and road transfers, flying into Kidepo’s airstrip to avoid the long overland journey from Kampala, then connecting overland to Sipi Falls on the return leg of the trip.
Sipi Falls itself offers guided hiking to all three waterfalls, along with Arabica coffee tours through the surrounding smallholder farms, a genuinely different activity from the wildlife-focused days at Kidepo earlier in the trip.
Practical Notes
A Uganda e-visa or East Africa Tourist Visa, arranged before travel, is required for most nationalities, along with a yellow fever vaccination certificate if arriving from a country with risk of transmission. Travel insurance covering trekking or wildlife activities and medical evacuation is strongly recommended, and malaria prevention is worth discussing with a travel health clinic ahead of your trip given the range of altitudes and habitats this itinerary covers.
US dollars printed after 2009 are widely accepted for park fees, permits and lodge bills across this itinerary, while Ugandan shillings are more practical for tips, markets and smaller day-to-day purchases along the route. Mobile network coverage is generally reliable at lodges and along the main connecting roads, though it becomes patchy inside the parks and forest reserves themselves.
Because permits and lodge availability are limited, particularly during the June to September and December to February peak seasons, we recommend booking this itinerary at least three to four months in advance for peak-season travel, with somewhat more flexibility available during the quieter shoulder months.
Tipping is customary though not compulsory across this itinerary. Rangers, trackers and guides typically receive a tip at the end of any trekking or guided activity, generally scaled to group size, while your driver-guide is usually tipped separately at the end of the full trip given their role extends across every day of the itinerary.
A private 4×4 safari vehicle with an experienced English-speaking driver-guide accompanies you for the entire trip, handling both park game-viewing tracks and the road transfers this itinerary involves, with the same guide staying with you throughout.
Who This Itinerary Suits
This itinerary suits travelers who have already researched Uganda’s more popular southwestern parks and specifically want a quieter, less-visited alternative, or those with a genuine interest in landscapes and wildlife found nowhere else in the country, from Kidepo’s cheetah and striped hyena to Sipi’s waterfall hiking and coffee culture.
Given the flying and driving involved in connecting these two remote destinations, this itinerary requires more advance planning than a standard southwestern circuit, and we recommend booking flights and permits well ahead of your intended travel dates.
Physical Preparation for Gorilla Trekking
Gorilla trekking in Bwindi is graded as moderate to strenuous depending on where the assigned family is ranging that day. Trails climb steep, muddy ridges through tangled vegetation, and altitude in the park ranges from roughly 1,160 to 2,607 metres, so a reasonable level of fitness helps considerably. Porters are available at the trailhead for a small fee and are worth hiring — they carry daypacks, offer a steadying hand on slick sections, and their fee directly supports the local community bordering the park. Waterproof hiking boots with good ankle support, a long-sleeved shirt and trousers to guard against nettles and safari ants, gardening gloves, and a rain jacket are the essentials most trekkers wish they had packed. Because Bwindi sits in a genuine rainforest, showers are possible in any month, so dressing in breathable layers rather than heavy clothing keeps the trek comfortable.
Tree-Climbing Lions of Ishasha
The Ishasha sector in the southern part of Queen Elizabeth National Park is famous for a rare behavioural trait: lions here regularly climb into the branches of the sector’s large fig trees, reportedly to escape biting insects and the heat of the savannah floor, and to get a better vantage point for spotting prey. Spotting a pride draped over the low branches of a fig tree is one of the more memorable sightings on a Uganda safari, though it requires patience since the behaviour is not guaranteed on any single game drive. Ishasha is quieter than the park’s main Kasenyi plains, seeing far fewer vehicles, which makes for a more private and unhurried game-viewing experience.
Kidepo Valley’s Remote Wilderness
Kidepo Valley National Park sits in Uganda’s remote northeastern corner bordering South Sudan and Kenya, and its isolation is precisely what makes it special — visitor numbers remain low year-round, so game drives across the park’s wide-open Narus and Kidepo valleys often feel like private safaris. The park supports wildlife found nowhere else in Uganda, including cheetah, bat-eared fox and greater and lesser kudu, alongside more classic sightings of lion, elephant and buffalo. Because of the distance from Kampala, most itineraries reach Kidepo by light aircraft, which also affords sweeping views over the Karamoja region’s dramatic, rugged landscape on the way in.
Choosing When to Travel
East Africa’s weather generally divides into two dry seasons — roughly December to February and June to October — and two wetter periods around March to May and November, though rainfall patterns vary by country and region and have become somewhat less predictable in recent years. Dry-season travel tends to concentrate wildlife around permanent water sources, making game viewing more predictable, while the wetter months bring lush scenery, fewer other travellers, and better rates at many lodges, along with the arrival of migratory bird species. Neither period is a bad time to travel; the right choice depends more on whether the priority is guaranteed dry trails and concentrated wildlife or a quieter, greener experience.
Health and Travel Preparation
Most countries in this region require proof of yellow fever vaccination for entry, particularly if arriving from or having transited another yellow-fever-endemic country, and it is worth checking current requirements with your airline or embassy well ahead of departure. Malaria is present across most safari areas at varying risk levels, so consulting a travel health clinic about prophylaxis, alongside practical measures like insect repellent and covering up at dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active, is standard advice for the region.
