5 Days Gorillas and chimpanzee Tracking

Overview

The 5 Days Gorillas and chimpanzee Tracking/trekking Safari is designed for those who are primarily interested in watching wild primates. The program includes chimp tracking in Kibale and gorilla trekking in Bwindi. While looking for the two large primates, visitors may also see baboons, vervet monkeys, pottos, red-tailed monkeys, Colobus monkeys, and a variety of smaller primates/monkeys.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival and transfer to Kibale Forest National Park.

You will be picked up early morning from the hotel in Kampala/ Entebbe after the morning breakfast, you will brief you about the safari as you start your journey driving southwestern region of the country. The drive takes you through the country side with lush green scenery and rolling hills of kabale.

Enroute you will have stop over for lunch in fort portal town and after, embark on the journey driving to park arriving in the afternoon, proceed and check in to the lodge for relaxation. Later evening, you will have dinner and overnight stay.

Accommodation options: Primate lodge (luxury), Chimpanzee Forest Guest house (Mid-range), Rwenzori view guest house/Kibale forest camp (Budget).

Day 2: Chimpanzee trekking and Bigodi nature walk.

After having your early morning breakfast head to the Kibale National Park headquarters for a briefing before the chimpanzee trekking adventure starts.

The park Warden or Guide will provide the rules and regulations information regarding chimp trekking, including how to conduct oneself during the activity.

Chimpanzee tracking in Kibale National Park takes about 3-5 hours, however you will only have one hour with them. After one hour, you will return to your lodge for lunch and relaxation. In the evening, you’ll go for a nature walk around the Bigodi swamp, where you’ll see more of the park’s 13 primates including the baboons, black and white colobus monkeys, grey checked Mangabey’s among others as well as several bird species. The Bigodi swamp is birders paradise with big number of several bird species spotted here. Dinner and overnight stay at the lodge.

Day 3: Transfer to Bwindi impenetrable national park.

Wake up to a relaxed check out and drive to Bwindi impenetrable forest.

Driving via Kabale to Mbarara road, on arrival in Mbarara, you will have your lunch and embark on your journey arriving in the park late afternoon. On arrival drive and check in to the lodge and relax on the lodge grounds later

Dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 4: Gorilla trekking.

Following your morning breakfast will be leaving the lodge with your packed lunch and heading to the park headquarters for the briefing. The briefing for gorilla trekking begins at 7:00 a.m. During the briefing, the ranger guide will brief you about the rules and regulations for gorilla trekking and when in the presence of the gorillas. You will be put in groups of 8 led by ranger guide to begin the search in the forest. The trekking may last for about 2 hours to 8 hours depending on the movement of the gorillas.

When you find the gorilla family, snap as many shots as you can. Listen to what the Rangers say. You will spend one hour with the gorilla family.
After one hour, you will return to the starting point, meet your guide, and drive to the lodge. Later in the evening, you will visit the Batwa Pygmy community.

The Batwa pygmies resided in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest for thousands of years. Following the Batwa cultural encounter will be a drive back to your lodge for dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 5: Departure.

Wake up for morning breakfast and thereafter, check out of the lodge and start your return journey back to Kampala. You will have a stop over for lunch in Mbarara town continue with the journey with another stop at the equator for relaxation and photoshoot. Embark on your journey arriving in Kampala late afternoon. The guide will drop you off at the airport in time for your departure flight back home or at your preferred drop of point.
