Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Transfer from Kigali to Kibale Forest National Park.
On the first day you will meet up with your safari guide at either the airport or your hotel, have a simple safari briefing and then begin your journey to Kibale National Park. Along the route, take in the stunning landscape of Rwanda and Uganda.
Don’t forget to have all of your paperwork ready since you’ll be questioned for them at the Uganda Rwanda border crossing. A yellow fever card is really significant. Lunch will be had at an appropriate location along the route. The driver will make sure you arrive early enough to have a good night’s rest in preparation for Chimpanzee tracking the following day.
Day 2: Chimpanzee trekking and transfer to Kibale Forest National Park.
Get up early and have breakfast. Your safari guide will drive you to the park headquarters for a briefing. The briefing is delivered by a park guide and covers subjects such as chimpanzee trekking during a Uganda Rwanda safari, the forest, what to anticipate, the park’s chimpanzee communities, and how to behave around them.
Chimpanzee hiking normally takes 3 to 5 hours. The chimps are more mobile than gorillas, so the experience is unique. This suggests that you may have to continue chasing them at high speeds even once you discover them. Chimpanzee groups are more dramatic, with continual disputes among members.
After observing the group for an hour, you will return to your lodge for lunch and relaxation. Your guide will begin the 2-hour drive from Kibale National Park to Queen Elizabeth National Park in the afternoon. After checking in, take a walk about your lodge before heading to bed.
Day 3: Morning game drive and an afternoon boat cruise.
You will be picked up early and brought to the Kasenyi plains or Mweya region with your packed breakfast for an early morning wildlife drive. This early wildlife drive is designed to allow you to see the animals returning to their dens after hunting at night. Expect to witness leopards, hippos, hartebeests, lions, tiny primates, birds, and other early risers.
After the wildlife drive, you will be transported back to the lodge for an early lunch before relaxing while you wait for the next activity in Queen Elizabeth National Park. At 2 p.m., the guide will take you to the Kazinga Channel for a boat ride. The Kazinga Channel separates Lake Edward from Lake George.
The majority of Queen Elizabeth’s fauna congregates here. It is also one of Africa’s greatest bird-watching sites. You will be pleasantly surprised by what the channel has to offer throughout the boat tour. Return to the lodge for dinner and an overnight stay.
Day 4: Transfer to Volcanoes National Park.
Wake up to a fresh day, eat breakfast, and check out and start your journey to Rwanda, leaving Queen Elizabeth National Park with en route game drive through the Ishasha sector in the quest for tree-climbing lions.
Lions can be seen resting on the tops of fig and acacia trees after hunting at night. The lions stay on top of the trees to avoid mosquito attacks on the ground, which also provides them with excellent views of their next meal.
Expect to encounter elephants, buffaloes, and the Uganda Kob, among other animals, in the Ishasha area.
After finishing the wildlife drive in Ishasha, it’s time to proceed to Rwanda, Volcanoes National Park. Lunch will be taken on the way back to Rwanda.
Dinner and an overnight stay at your lodge.
Day 5: Gorilla trekking and afternoon cultural encounter.
Wake up early to eat breakfast, then drive to the park office for a briefing. The Rangers and Park Guides will lead the briefing at 7:00 a.m. Following the briefing, you will be allocated to a gorilla family based on your fitness level and age. If you have heavy bags, engage a porter at the briefing.
Tracking gorillas might be difficult depending on where the family lives, but it is well worth the effort in the end. Seeing mountain gorillas in the wild is the ultimate wildlife experience. Follow the directions of the park guides and wardens, especially when you encounter primates.
You will spend one hour with the gorilla family. Take the time to examine them and get photos/videos. The driver will be waiting for you at the starting point to bring you back to the resort for lunch and rest.
After relaxing in your hotel, the guide will pick you up to go on a tour of the Gorilla Guardians Village in Musanze, which is close the park. Formerly known as the Iby’iwacu traditional Village, the Centre brings together all of Rwanda’s tribes to showcase their traditional history. Expect musicals, dances, and dramas. You will also have the option to purchase souvenirs if desired. The Iby’iwacu Cultural Village is created to high standards, and visitors are more than simply spectators. You can even dress in traditional clothes and join the performances. Dinner an an overnight stay at your lodge.
Day 6: Golden monkey trekking and afternoon visit to the Twin Lakes.
Wake up early again, eat breakfast, and drive to the park headquarters for the briefing on golden monkey tracking. You will be accompanied by a Guide and armed Rangers while you look for the charming monkeys in the jungle. Golden monkeys are endangered primates found only in Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. They survive on bamboo shoots and other plants. Their biggest threat is from humans, although eagles are their natural foes. In contrast to gorillas, golden monkeys are quite lively and like flash photography.
After a while strolling in the forest, you’ll notice golden monkeys on top of trees or grazing on the ground. Once finished, return to your resort for lunch and rest. Later in the afternoon, the boat will take you to the picturesque twin lakes of Ruhondo and Burera.
Day 7: Transfer for a Kigali city tour and departure.
You will wake up early, eat breakfast, then drive to Kigali. Lunch will be in Kigali, followed by a tour of the city. The tour includes stops at the Gisozi Genocide Memorial Site, the Presidential Palace Museum, city markets, and gift shops where you may purchase local crafts/arts. The Kigali city tour takes between one and two hours. Following this final tour of Rwanda, you will be dropped off at your accommodation or transported to the airport.
