Gorilla families in Nkuringo sector.
Nkuringo Sector Gorilla Families: Nkuringo Sector is one of the four gorilla sectors in Kisoro District’s southern region of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. The second gorilla trekking area to open in 2004 after Buhoma was Nkuringo, which is located at a high elevation of roughly 6800 feet.
Three gorilla families—the Nkuringo, Bikingi, and Bushaho families—live in the Nkuringo area and are accessible for daily trekking. Because it is home to the greatest number of mountain gorillas, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is one of the most popular gorilla destinations in Africa.
In addition to the Nkuringo sector, gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is conducted in the Rushaga sector in the south, the Buhoma sector in the north, and the Ruhija sector in the east. The park is home to more than 22 habituated gorilla families and is accessible to tourists.
Families of gorillas in the Nkuringo sector
In 1997, the Nkuringo family became the first to establish a home in the southern region of the impenetrable Bwindi National Park. The gorilla gang had 17 members at first, but several of them continued splitting out, leaving it with just 12.
The Rukiga term Nkuringo, which means a circular hill, is whence the gorilla group got its name. The Nkuringo gorilla family is renowned for spending up to 98 percent of their time foraging outside of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. They are also the first gorilla group to record the birth of gorilla twins in the park.
However, in order to reduce the interface between humans and wildlife, this strategy resulted in the eviction of the previous human residents from nearby communities and the creation of a buffer zone. The gorilla troop was led by an elderly silverback named Nkuringo during the time of habituation. He had three silverbacks: Safari, Rafiki, and Christmas.
Safari Silverback, working closely with his two brothers, lead the family when Nkuringo Silverback passed away on April 27, 2008, at the age of 45. However, during a confrontation with a tribe of wild gorillas known as Bushaho, Safari unexpectedly vanished, and his whereabouts are still a mystery.
Rafiki became control of the Nkuringo family after Safari vanished. Later, in June 2020, a group of hunters speared down Rafiki Silverback. The 12 members of the Nkuringo gorilla family—four black backs, four adult females, and two infants—are currently led by Rwamutwe black backs in close collaboration with Tabu black backs.
Family of Bushaho Gorillas
The second gorilla group in the Nkuringo area of the impenetrable Bwindi National Park is the Bushaho gorilla family. The Bushaho group was founded in 2012, and while some of its members were from non-habituated groups, others were former members of the Nkuringo family. The gorilla family, which currently consists of ten members, is still undergoing habituation. Three adult females, two sub-adult females, three newborns, one black back, and one silverback Bahati, the dominant silverback.
The family of Christmas Gorillas
In Nkuringo region of Bwindi impenetrable national park, which is accessible for gorilla trekking, Christmas is the newest or most recently habituated gorilla family. The nine members of the Christmas Gorilla Family are led by the Christmas Silverback, a former Nkuringo family member.
The price of permits for gorilla trekking in the Nkuringo sector
In the Nkuringo sector, gorilla trekking licenses cost 800 USD per person for non-resident foreigners, 700 USD per person for residents, and 300,000 USD per person for citizens of East Africa.

When to go to Nkuringo Sector
Although it is possible to visit gorilla families in the Nkuringo sector at any time of year, the best time to go is during the dry season, which runs from June to September and December to February. This is because the national park receives less rainfall during this time, making the gorilla trekking trails more passable and dry than they are during the wet/rainy season, when they are muddy and slippery.
