Volcanoes National park

Volcanoes National park in Rwanda’s famous for gorilla tracking in addition to other various species that be found within the park. Volcanoes National park forms part of the Virunga volcanoes which are shared between the democratic republic of Congo, Uganda, and Rwanda itself. There are mostly evergreen Bamboo forests covering the park and some of the areas are dominated by the grass heath and swampy areas. The key attraction in the volcanoes National park is the endangered mountain gorillas and the activity of gorilla trekking happening throughout the year.

There about 12 habituated gorillas in Volcanoes National park that are opened for gorilla trekking. Other than gorilla trekking, the park also features over 200 bird species which can be seen during gorilla trekking or as an independent activity. Other animals found in the forest include Forest elephants, buffaloes, bush pigs, giant forest hogs, duikers, spotted hyenas, bush-bucks, and several primates. You can as well enjoy the golden monkey trekking that is found in also in Volcanoes National Park. 

Nyungwe Forest National Park (Chimpanzee tracking)

Nyungwe forest national park is the budget montane forest that is well known and boasts over 1,050 plant species, 250 Albertine Rift Endemics, and 200 orchids, along with at least 120 butterfly species. The vertebrate fauna includes 32 amphibians, 38 reptiles, 85 mammals, and 310 bird species of which about 15% are Albertine Rift Endemics. Chimpanzee tracking is the major activity that is carried out in Nyungwe Forest National Park and only 2 chimpanzee habituated families are available for trekking in Nyungwe forests national park with the largest group of chimpanzees having more than 60 individual chimpanzees.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Transfer to Nyungwe Forest

You will be picked up by our company driver guide from either a hotel / Kigali International Airport for a transfer to Nyungwe Forest NP; southwest of Rwanda in Gisenyi province. En route, visit the Butare Museum, Mirambi Genocide Site and Nyanza King’s Palace among others. Later proceed with your drive to Nyungwe Forest National Park. Dine and rest at your lodge.

Day 2: Chimp Tracking and Canopy Walk

Upon rising; enjoy breakfast and head for the Nyungwe Forest Park offices for morning briefing on the chimpanzee tracking expedition. With your tracking gear embark on this amazing exercise; where you will be rewarded with clear views of various primate species like L’Hoest’s monkey, golden monkeys, large troops of the Angola Colobus, vervet monkeys, Silver Monkey, Hamlyn’s Monkey, Red-tailed Monkey, Dent’s Mona Monkey, Olive Baboon and the Grey-cheeked Mangabeys etc.

Later, have lunch in wild and in the afternoon, proceed with the Unique Canopy Forest Walk; rewarding you with an entire forest coverage with wild animals seeing you from above as you swing over the thick dense trees.

Day 3: Transfer to Volcanoes National Park

On waking up; have breakfast and later hit the road for your transfer to Volcanoes NP, northwest of Rwanda in Musanze province. En route enjoy the spectacular scenery views of the country side.
Later Dine and rest for overnight at your lodge.

Day 4: Mountain Gorilla Trek and Iby’wacu Cultural Center

Have breakfast and head for the Kinigi Park offices by 7:00AM; just in time for the morning briefing on the code3 of conduct when trekking for the mountain gorillas. After locating the creatures, take clear observation of their behavior while taking photographs and videos for this wonderful encounter. Later retrieve the starting point; meet up your guide for a drive back to your lodge.

After Lunch, step out for a visit to the Iby’wacu Cultural Village where you will learn more about the Rwandan cultural practices.
Later; Dine and rest for overnight at your lodge.

Day 5: Transfer Back to Kigali and Departure

Upon rising; have breakfast and later set off for Kigali for drop off at either a hotel or Kigali International Airport.

However, with an early arrival, you may engage in a Kigali City Tour to visit the Gisozi Genocide memorial Site (with the remains of the 1994, Rwanda Genocide out Break), some big market centers like Kimilonko and several craft shops and stores
