Mount Elgon National Park
Mount Elgon National Park is a UNESCO Man and Biosphere Reserve located on the Uganda-Kenya border. The park has an area of 494 square miles and is a popular tourist destination in Eastern Uganda. A bigger portion of the park (430 square miles) lies on the Ugandan side of the border. In 1992, the Ugandan part was designated as a national park, up from forest reserve status. The park’s name comes from Mount Elgon, a notable physical feature in the park. Mount Elgon is an extinct volcano that erupted more than 24 million years ago.
It is the tallest volcanic peak in East Africa and the eighth-highest in Africa. Mount Elgon features the world’s biggest caldera, which is approximately 60 kilometers long and 40 kilometers wide. This caldera formed as magma drained from the bottom, causing the cone to collapse. Scientists think that Mount Elgon was once Africa’s tallest peak until millions of years of erosion significantly lowered its height. Over 400 plant species and 143 birds have been identified. Mount Elgon National Park has half of Uganda’s butterfly species, including the rare Maathai’s Lonleg dragonfly, which was discovered in 2000.
Its slopes of the highlands are home to a variety of species, including black and white colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, buffaloes, elephants, red-tailed monkeys, spotted hyenas, Oribi and Defassa waterbucks, among others.

The Matheniko Mountain Range is an important watershed that supplies water to the Kidepo Valley National Park and the surrounding hamlet of Moroto, which is located to the north of the reserve.
Matheniko Wildlife Reserve is a wildlife sanctuary for elephants, lions, leopards, hyenas, buffaloes, Uganda kobs, oribis, civets, topi, wild cats, duikers, zebras, giraffes, cheetahs, elands, Bright’s gazelle, and various antelope species, among others. The reserve also supports approximately 200 bird species, including the Eastern Bronze-napped Pigeon, the Abyssinian Ground Hornbill, the Mountain Yellow Warbler, Verreaux’s Eagle, the Egyptian Vulture, the Thick-billed Honeyguide, the Hartlaub’s Turaco, and the Ethiopian swallow, among others. Patas monkeys, baboons, and vervet monkeys are the most abundant mammals and primates. Reptiles include Gackos, Chameleons, Puff Adders, Tiny Lizards, Large Savannah Monitor Lizards, Water Snakes, and Large Rock Pythons, among others.
Mabira Forest
Mabira forest is a lush tropical rainforest located in the Buikwe districts, between Jinja and Lugazi. The forest spans an area of around 120 square kilometers. This intriguing woodland is located 20 kilometers from Jinja and around 54 kilometers from Kampala, Uganda’s capital and largest metropolis. Mabira forest is home to around 311 distinct tree species, with the forest center consisting of large ancient tree species that are more than 70 years old.
Mabira woodland is also home to around 219 different bufferfly species, 300 birds, and 97 moths. The birds include the Great Blue Turaco, black-billed Turaco, Ross’s Turaco, bare-faced go-away bird, eastern plantain-eater, and red-chested cuckoo, among others.
