Murchison falls Park

Rhino Tracking in Uganda is one of the most unique and premier experiences tourists undertake especially those that happen to visit the spectacular Murchison Falls National Park. Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is your favorite stop for many tourists to explore and track the rhinos. This is a walking tour with your local guide around the sanctuary – the only place in Uganda where visitors can come face-to-face with the southern white rhinos.

Rhino tracking is done every day, but on schedule and the best ideal times are 08:00 am to 10:00 am and 04:00 pm to 06:00 pm. Transiting visitors can visit and track rhinos at any time of the day. This sophisticated trek usually takes between 1½ to 2½ hours, depending on the location of the rhinos.

While on this tour you will be guided to the home of these white rhinos on foot, with an expert and trained ranger to track and spot the rhinos. The trek to the rhino is safe following safety guidelines from your expert guide.

Still, on rhino tracking, you will encounter a range of other wildlife species including Uganda kobs, oribis, bushbucks, and waterbucks among others, and a number of other bird species. Guests are advised to consider closed shoes, long pants, and insect replants plus hand gloves.

Watching the rhinos is a stunning retreat and can be combined with a boat canoe ride to explore the Shoebill. This is one of the most sought-after bird species in Uganda. So, Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is one of the few places where you are almost always guaranteed to see the Shoebill stork. The swamps around are great sources of food for the stork.

The Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is one of our favorite places in Uganda idyllically located 176 km (100 miles) north of Kampala on the Kampala – Gulu highway. This is towards Murchison Falls National Park, where you can branch off at Nakitoma Trading center. Ziwa is currently the only place for rhino tracking in Uganda, so you are guaranteed to see these rhinos in the wild.

Presently the sanctuary is home to more than twenty-two (22) southern white rhinos, so, why not indulge in a rejuvenating sanctuary filled with flora and fauna?
